Assignment 9 - Black and white

I took 10 different photos and converted them from color to black and white. Since I do not have Photo Shop, I used Picasa 3 to do my editing. Although I did not have the editing tools in Photo Shop, I thought some of my pictures turned out very well and overall, I was pleased.

I showed the original photo in color, then the edited in black and white.

Assignme 8 - Macro

Assignment 8 - Macro It was kind of fun picking out what I wanted to take for my macro pictures. I did find it much easier to get macro pictures outside then inside.

I had a hard time getting the correct lighting and the camera to focus inside. Some of the pictures were very blurry. Even so, I still managed to get 30 good macro and super macro pictures.

Assignment 7 Portrait lighting with Artificial lighting

These portraits are of my daughter Susan. They were taken in her home in the city of St. Louis.

Because of the lack of outlets available to me, I was not too happy with my lighting even though I used 3 photo lights. Placement of these lights was limited due to having only one extension cord, making it difficult to get rid of some shadows. I tried to compensate a little by editing in Picasa.

My white balance was incondescent. My f stops were 4.7 - 5.0. ISO ranged between 80 and 699.

Susan was a very co-operative subject, trying to give me different poses which I was pleased with.

I have learned several things, maily, make sure you have plenty of extension cords and watch out, those photo lamps are hot.

Assignment 6 - Architecture

These photos are of Kirkwood United Methodist Church situated on the NW corner of Clay and Adams.

I used various + and - settings of exposure compensation, white balance and various shooting modes. I did not use flash on any of these.

I used exposure compensation to get the lighting effect that I wanted.

This was an interesting assignment and I have learned a lot about taking photos using the various settings on my camera

Assignment 5 - Landscapes

This was really a fun assignment.

Sitting in the back yard one evening I glanced up and saw the view of the sky with the trees in the foreground. Using night landscape with flash I took the first three pictures. Saturday, a storm was moving in and I tried to get a shot of it. Monday morning I took my camera with me on a walk up my street then to Lemp Road and up to Forest, taking pictures along the way. That afternoon, I drove to Kirkwood park and walked around Walker lake then through the park to the amphitheater. It was a good time to go as there were not too many people there.

Not only did I get my assignment completed but got some exercise too.

Assignment 4 and 4a

The first set of pictures in Assignment 4 showed pictures I had taken using fill flash, slow synch and auto. In the second set, 4a, the first picture was taken with full auto with fan off. The next three were taken with the fan at high, medium and low speeds. The next four pictures were taken with slow synch with fan set on low, medium and high. The last picture was taken with slow synch, high speed with the night light on.

Assignment 3 - Photo story

These are pictures of an 18th century blanket chest, brought in by a client. This chest had been in a flood about a year ago and needed to be cleaned up and restored.

I photographed the restoration process which only took a day to complete. The chest required only one coat of varnish. A more complex restoration might require stripping, cleaning off stripper, sanding for smoothness, staining if it is necessary and several coats of varnish and fine rubbing with rubbing compound after each coat of varnish. The whole process is completed with a coat of polish. The final article should be satiny smooth with no brush marks. This process usually takes several days to a week to finish.

Bill started out by washing all the mud off of the chest with water, a rag and a toothbrush. It was allowed to dry for a couple hours then he worked it over with a furniture restorer, steel wool and a toothbrush to get into crevices. He followed up with a light sanding then stain and varnish.
